John Abraham is one of the most successful male models in India having successfully migrated to Bollywood. His revolutionary looks, macho physique and baby smile made him the highest-paid supermodel in India. After scorching the ramp, he made his film debut with Pooja Bhat’s erotic thriller Jism in 2003 that made him a star overnight.

His films like the paranormal Saaya (2003) and romantic Paap (2003) failed to click at the box office. His first blockbuster smash hit came in 2004 when he played the anti-hero Kabir in Dhoom (2004). Some of his other films that clicked included Garam Masala, Viruddh, Aetbaar, Taxi 9211, Kabul Express and Dostana.

Incidentally, he began his career as a Media Planner at Enterprise-Nexus, an ad agency in Mumbai (which is now part of the WPP Group). One day, a model ditched the shoot and his boss suggested that he fill in for him. With one thing leading to another, he soon landed a gig for the Live-In Jeans brand. After he did the Philips press shoot with Atul Kasbekar, one of India’s premier fashion photographers, he declared in an interview that John was the face to watch in the future. And he never looked back since.

John’s big break came when he entered the Glad Rags Manhunt in March 1999. He reached the finals and went on to compete in the Philippines where he was the first runner up. After that, began a whirlwind of modelling assignments. He was signed on by Carrie Models in Singapore and did a fair amount of work there, and later in Hong Kong, London and New York. For a while, he did music videos, including Jhanjhar and Chupke Chupke by Pankaj Udhas.

John is half South Indian, half Parsi - his father is a Christian from Aluva, Kerala, and his mother is a Zoroastrian Parsi. Being Catholic, his father added the name Abraham to his son John as a mark of respect to the first patriarch and progenitor of the Hebrew people in the Bible. His girl friend happens to be yet another model-turned-actress Bipasha Basu.
